Joel 2:13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.
I wonder if sometimes we think that God is impressed when we go to the alter, get down on our knees, burry our head in our hands and ask for forgiveness. As if this outward show has somehow convinced God to look the other way for awhile. Maybe that “act” of repentance has bought you a little bit more time before you actually have to do the dirty work of actual repentance.
I love how in the book of Joel, God is calling the people to return to Him. He admonishes them to come to Him with their whole heart, with fasting, with weeping, with mourning, and with real – genuine – authentic – repentance.
I wonder if God would say the same thing to us today. It is time to return… to stop going through the motions of repentance and actually allow the Holy Spirit to RIP sin from our heart, no matter how painful and how damaging it may be. It seems that real repentance is messy and extremely painful…are you ready for that? Or are you content to keep going to the motions.
